Lava deserts, river valleys and rough nature
This is a wonderful trail for riders who wants to admire the rough nature and the stunning landscapes in the Etna area on horseback. Furthermore you will ride through woodland and Lava deserts, river valleys and mountains and wild areas.
Duration: 6 days and 7 nights – 6 days on horseback.

Day One – Saturday:
Arrival at Catania airport. On request (at an extra cost) we will arrange your pick up from the airport to your first accommodation.
Day Two – Sunday:
Departure from Scuderie Ardichetto at 08:00. After passing through old roads and paths of woodlands you reach “ Val Calanna” where 1992 the braided lava flows began to flow in to keep the lava from flowing towards the village Zafferana. You will reach the famous “ Ilice di Carrinu”, a beautiful large and old tree about 700 years old. After a short photo stop you ride in direction “Ragabo” pine forest before you reach your accommodation . Dinner and overnight.
Day Three – Monday
After breakfast you ride up to “Piano Provenzana”, famous as Ski resort during winter time until you will reach the famous famous volcanic cone “Monte Nero” (approximately 2049 a.s.l.). Along your ride you can admire some particular craters also called “hornitos” and lava flows from different periods. You will ride in turns through forest and typical volcanic landscapes. You climb in direction “la bottoniera” (approximately 2150 a.s.l.) where you will see a succession of craters from the last great eruption of 2002. You ride down in direction “Altomontana” a wide path at an average height of 1700m a.s.l., drawing a half circle around Mt Etna, where you can explore on horseback the characteristics of the volcan: old craters, stone forests, woodland, old lava flows. You ride towards the forest “Timparossa” where you will enjoy your picnic and our horses have the possibility to drink water. You ride will continue in direction Solicchiata, before you will reach your accommodation.
Day Four – Tuesday:
Today your ride will begin in the spectacular Valley of Alcantara, through enchanting meadows and amazing woodland passing the byzantine “Cube ” chapel dating back to between the 7 C and 9 C A.D. to reach the small Alcantara gorge “Piccole Gole dell’Alcantara” formed by the river that run among the basalt rocks. You will stop and admire this spectacle of nature. until you will reach the eastern propensity of the Nebrodi mountain, the impressive forest “Malabotta”, surrounded by marvelous ancient oak and beech forest and under the shadow you will enjoy your pic nic, before you will ride on to the Agrimusco the so called “sicilian Stonehange”, following the megaliths with suggestive forms. During your ride admire the beautiful view and in good weather up to the Aeolian Islands. By early evening you will arrive at your accommodation in Montalbano, where you will appreciate a delicious dinner with local products.
Day Five – Wednesday:
After breakfast you will ride through the historic village of Montalbano up to the ancient castle, once served as a summer residence for Federico II d’Aragona. After you outpace the woodland which is dominated by chestnuts and nuts trees you will reach the so called “tholos”, small, circulair, stone buildings until you will ride up to Sicily highest town, called Floresta, located 1274m above sea level. After your picnic you continue through impressive paths where you perhaps can admire the wild herd of horse with black coat……. known as “Cavalli San Fratellani” You continue through beautiful landscapes of beech, maple and oak trees, before you reach your accommodation in Monte Colla, located in an isolated area at 1400m high and 7km from the paved road. The farmhouse is from 17th century and has attached a barn. Dinner and Overnight.
Day Six – Thursday:
After breakfast you continue your adventure to reach again the “Altomontana“ path before you will reach “Rifugio Galvarina”, where you will enjoy your pic nic. Your ride continue through the volcanic forest before you will reach your accommodation. Dinner and Overnight.
Day Seven – Thursday:
Breakfast and departure at around 08:30. Leaving your hotel you pass through the “Silvestri Craters” and ride along the border of the extinct vulcano, on the days of good visibility, don’t miss the amazing view. You will then continue to descend through old lava flows to reach the cave so called” Grotta Cassone” a 277 meters long tunnel of old lava flow from 1792. You ride towards “Piano del Vescovo” near to which you will enjoy your pic nic before your ride continue to descend in the direction of the stable Ardichetto.
Day Eight – Saturday:
Departure after breakfast
