6 Days Horse Trekking from Cefalù to Etna
a paradise for riders and nature lovers
Dolomite of Sicily, Alcantara Valley and Mount Etna
This beautiful trail is a paradise for riders and nature lovers to discover on the back of beloved horses the variety of four Sicilian parks: starting from the Madonie Mountain, also called the “Dolomite of Sicily” formed by carbonate limestones up to the Nebrodi Park with his dense woodland passing through the Alcantara Valley with its spectacular basaltic stones to reach the highest active volcan in Europe, the Mount Etna.
Etna and Alcantara erary from Cefalù to Etna is characterised by various scenic views as well as a mixture of traditions, culture and history.
Duration: 6 days and 7 nights – 6 days on horseback.

Day One – Saturday:
Arrival at Palermo airport. On request (at an extra cost) we will arrange your pick up from the airport to your first accommodation.
Day Two – Sunday (Castelbuono – Geraci)
Breakfast and departure around 8:00: You will embark on a long ride and enjoy the countryside surrounding Castelbuono, a charming medieval town rich in history and tradition. The trail will lead you through the largest cork forest in Sicily up to Gearci, a mountain town lying at an altitude of approximately 1000m. After your relaxing pic nic you leave the forest and ride on ancient paths of the beautiful Madonie countryside until you reach Casalvecchio Geraci, a nice farmhouse on the banks of the river Raino, a tributary of the river Pollina. Dinner with delicious local products and overnight. Approximate riding time: 8 hours
Day Three – Monday (Geraci –Sperlinga – Nicosia)
Breakfast and departure around 9:00: Today you will ride following an old trade “trazzera” and admire the amazing landscapes riding up towards a wind farm under the giants blades and then reaching the border of the provinces of Palermo, Enna and Messina. You ride continue towards one of the prettiest villages in Itlay, Sperlinga, characterized by its castle, entirely excavates in the rock, as well as some civil construction, that were used as ‘proper’ houses which, incredibly, were inhabited until the mid-1960s.You will stop for a delicious pic nic in the reserve of Sambughetti – Campanito before we reach the prehistorical site where you can visit by foot the caves carved in to the rock. You will mount up again and ride down to your farmhouse “La Sugherita”. Dinner with traditional sicilian food and overnight. Approximate riding time: 6 hours
Day Four – Tuesday (Nicosia – San Teodoro)
Breakfast and departure at 08:30: You will ride into the Nebrodi park along the famous ridge track through high mountain forest and pastures of breathtaking views. You ride down in the Valley and along the riverbed Cerami before we ride up again where in good weather you can admire the beautiful view to the Aeolian Islands and looking south the view to the majestic Mt. Etna. You ride on towards the river Troina and on the bank under the shade you will enjoy your pic nic. After then you route continues along the bank and you will arrive at your accommodation “Lo Scudiero” where you will be fed and entertained by the owner who provide wonderful home-produced food. Approximate riding time: 7 hours
Day Five – Wednesday (San Teodor – Bronte)
Breakfast and departure at 7:30: You will start your ride along the riverbed Troina until you reach the mouth of the Simeto river . You will ride along a parallel path before you reach the little town Maniace, famous for the Castle of Nelson, before a Benedictine Abbey built in 1173 and was given by Ferdinando III to Admiral Horatio Nelson for having repressed the Neapolitan republic in 1799. You continue your ride until we reach the little village Bronte, famous for the green gold of Etna, the “Pistachio of Bronte” before you arrive to your accommodation in “Fucina di Vulcano”,where you will appreciate another delicious dinner with local products. Approximate riding time: 9 hours
Day Six – Thursday (Etna)
Breakfast and departure at 8:00: You will start today by heading up to reach the “Altomontana” path, a unique trail on Mount Etna. It’s a wide, easy path at an average height of 1700 mts above sea level. The path draws a half-circle around mount Etna from north-east to south-west side. When we walk on this track we totally go inside the nature and the story of mount Etna, characterized by stone forests, caves, old craters, woods and magma deserts. You will enjoy your pic nic before you ride through the amazing Etna landscapes before you reach your overnight accommodation Villa Dorata where you will enjoy your dinner with typical local products. Approximate riding time: 7 hours
Day Seven – Friday (Silvestri Craters)
Breakfast and departure at 8:00: Today you will enjoy a ride passing through an area rich of agriculture land characterized by vineyards, fields of almonds, olive and hazelnuts and drywalls of lava flows before you reach the Etna Natural Park. You pass through the “Silvestri Craters” and ride along the border of the extinct volcano, on the days of good visibility, don’t miss the amazing view. You will then continue to descend through old lava flows to reach the cave so called” Grotta Cassone” a 277 meters long tunnel of old lava flow from 1792. Inside it is possible to meet a tiny colony of bats. With a torch we will go inside the cave to discover the complete darkness of the cave. You ride towards “Piano del Vescovo” near to which you will enjoy your pic nic before we continue through woodland, ancient lavaflow to reach the extinct volcanic cone “Monte Illice” at an average height of 900 mts above sea level. A short ride along the border of this volcan will allow us a breathtaking view over the coast with more extinct volcan cones like “Monte S. Nicolò covered by green mountain orchards and mediterranean vegetation. You continue your ride through the Etna landscapes until you reach your accommodation for your last night. During our delicious dinner we will talk about our impressions and experiences during this trail.
